Court Summary 12/9/2019
Walking into the courtroom on this morning, Monday, December 9th, 2019, for the trial for my mother’s case brought no other feeling but dismay. The make-up of the courtroom was mostly Black, and if they were not Black then the rest of the majority were people of color. This was not surprising, to say the least, but as you all know the rest, it was disheartening.
As I was waiting for them to call my mother’s name, I was looking around the courtroom at the faces in the crowd, and at the faces behind the swinging door that separated Us from Them. The attorneys and court staff were laughing and lively, while the Accused were sitting straight-faced, awaiting the judgement on the matters of their freedom. When they finally called my mother’s name, Mikisa Thompson, my mother stood up along with her attorney and stood her power stance. She was ready to fight this case, but, of course, the state was not. Is this justice?
They “forgot” to schedule my mother’s case because they are not ready for this fight. We were born prepared for this fight because we never have a choice. This fight will continue on January 13th, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at Wake County Justice Center on the 4th floor and on January 21st, 2020 on the 2nd floor. See you all then.
